Happy holidays and best wishes for 2025! Here are some wonderful old pictures that were sent to me from Breanne Herrera, circa 1916. • Gabriel Anson Hawman and Anna Mabel Hawman in June 1916 • Anna Mabel Graves (Hawman) 1914 • Jasper, the house where Gabriel Hawman and Anna Mabel Graves lived when they were married. 1916 • Platoro, CO in 1913 • The Hawman family and Jasper residents, Gabriel is the man toward the middle white shirt, no hat, Walter is the one kneeling second from left. Around 1916. -Larry

7 Bells at Midnight (fka. The Jasper Ghost Cabin) Originally written on 09/12/2018 By Larry Wolcott and Family These are true facts about the town of Jasper, located high in the southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The town is situated at the base of the mighty Cornwall mountain, who some say was named by immigrant miners from the Cornwall mining district in faraway England. Since the early 1700’s, Jasper had many small gold mines, but the big strike was in 1895. The Foster-Hook strike at the Miser Mine promised great riches and wealth to the brave miners. When news of the exposed vein of gold reached Monte Vista on Sept 6, 1895, people start flocking to Jasper. Within 6 months, the tiny town of Jasper was bustling with over 1500 residents to support the mine. There were miners, stores, shops, a saloon and even a post office. The vein was so rich that the miners worked around-the-clock to recover the gold. Even in broad daylight, it was so dark in the mines that they had to wear special carbide headlamps. These headlamps glowed with an unusual orange tint that flickered like a campfire when they burned. Also, the distinctive clanking of the ore hammer could be heard at all hours of the night [clank! clank!]. The sound was loud that it echoed through the mountains and made it difficult for the people in the town to have a restful sleep. It was a long winter but thousands of ounces of gold were extracted from the Miser Mine. In today’s standard, there was over 30 million dollars-worth of gold recovered from the Miser. By the summer of 1896 most of the vein had been extracted and only small pockets of ore were being found. As the gold started to run out, so did the townspeople. Within a year there were no more than 50 people who stayed in Jasper, desperately looking for more riches. While most of the remaining people were decent folks trying to make a living, some of the miners were not. In fact, the Miser Mine got its name from what is said to be a curse that made certain people obsessed with finding the gold in Cornwall Mountain. A few of the miners were so fixated on the gold that they would do anything to have it. There were just three men working the mines at night because they wanted to find gold and keep the gold to themselves. They took turns with two in the shaft and one man above to operate the lift. There was a bell system they used to communicate with the lift operator, 3 bells followed by 1 meant it was time to hoist them out [ding, ding, ding... ding]. Then one night while chasing a vein of quartz, the men discovered what looked like high-grade ore. The ore sparkled with glorious golden flecks when their headlamps shined on it. 7 bells [ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding] was signaled with 7 bells which usually meant danger but the men agreed to use when they discovered gold. The three quickly began devising a plan to extract the ore in the middle of the night and keep it for themselves. They continued taking turns in the shaft, operating the lift and sneaking the ore out in their lunch pails. There was a stockpiling of very rich ore in a small cave somewhere near Jasper. This sneaky trick of stealing rich ore was known as ‘high grading’ and happened more times than many folks would realize. The leader of the gang was particularly devious and had his own plan to double-cross the other two and keep all of the gold for himself. On the night that they were extracting the last bit of ore, he saw his opportunity. It was his turn to operate the lift while the other two worked in the shaft. 3 bells followed by 1 [ding, ding, ding... ding] meant that he was to hoist them out so he started the lift. He started the machine but by the time they were half way up, he stopped the lift and began to hammer on the pully. The distinctive clanking [clank! clank!] of the ore hammer was heard from the Miser one last time. However, instead of dropping the lift, the entire shaft started to collapse under the weight of the suspended men. The ceiling holding the pully collapsed, causing all three men to plummet down the shaft and become trapped under the rubble. Two of the three men were still alive but barely. For several days and nights, the two men tried to signal for help with 7 bells. Ironically, the bell signal for striking it rich now meant a desperate plea for help! The signal was heard but there were no skilled miners left to dig them out in time so they all perished. It was sometime after the fateful accident that their bodies were discovered by the remaining townsfolk. However, the three miners had no known kin to claim their bodies. The townsfolk buried the miners with small gravestones at the bottom of a hill just west of Jasper. By 1897, the town of Jasper was once again deserted. Almost a hundred years later, in 1984, an ambitious land developer stumbled across the plats of Jasper and Cornwall. He began selling the properties to people in Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma and as far away as Hawaii. Soon, Jasper become a vacation destination with newcabins being enjoyed by families and sportsmen. However, one property outside of Jasper was purchased by professors from Boston in 1974. They built a communal cabin for everyone to share and enjoy. The communal cabin was a friendly place with simple rules, called the “Bunkers Code”. Those who wished to stay at the cabin could do so free of charge, leaving it cleaner than they found it, and always replenishing the firewood. This cabin is referred to by the locals as the Ghost Cabin. Since the 1980’s, there have been many reports of strange things happening at the ghost cabin. Several guests have mentioned strange bells sounding at midnight, often being confused for an alarm clock. However, they all recalled only 7 bells [ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding] instead of 12 that you would expect at midnight. Another example of unusually loud clanking sounds [clank! clank!] coming from underneath the cabin. Finally, some guests have claimed to have seen eerie orange lights outside the cabin after midnight, well after the campfire has been extinguished. The only thing these guests had in common was the fact that they all had gold with them. It may have been jewelry, watches or even gold dental fillings but they all had gold. Finally, one day not long ago, a piece of an old gravestone was discovered near the ghost cabin. There were no words, only the date 1896. The ghost cabin was built on top of the dead miner’s graves! Beware, anybody staying at the ghost cabin wearing gold past midnight may be visited by the cursed ghosts from the Miser Mine.

Jasper friends and family, Today is Christmas Eve, 2023 which always reminds me of 1 unusual but interesting fact about our beloved little town in the mountains. I remember the day, December 25, 2001 when I first registered the JasperColorado.com (http://JasperColorado.com)domain name. Can you believe it? Yes, it was devised 22 years ago but I found the internet archive and the first website posting was 2003 so we'll split the difference and call this the 20th anniversary of the JasperColorado.com (http://JasperColorado.com)website. I'm feeling nostalgic and typed up some back story you can read below, at the end of this post. The very first website landing page says it all. For over 20 years, I've held true to that simple statement of giving Jasper a home on the internet, and it's worked! "Welcome to JasperColorado.com!(http://JasperColorado.com) The Skeleton Site is Up - Well, it's not the greatest web site around, but it's a start. The intention for this site is to have a fundamental internet presence for Jasper. Do not expect all of the bells-n-whistles here, but a great place to find links and basic information about Jasper. In the Links section, we have several great places for you to visit that are maintained by other Jasper enthusiasts like yourself. Please feel free to email us directly to contribute to the site in any way. We are Looking for Links and content! Please, by all means consider sharing any pictures, information or links that others may find of value.Jasper, Colorado is a historic town high in the Rio Grande National Forest. It is surrounded by mountain, trees, water and wild life. Blah, blah.. More introduction stuff here." Here's some back story about how this website was started. Another weird but true Jasper story is that I found my cabin in the year 2000 in eBay, of all places. I was looking for parcels of land that were off grid and stumbled across a listing on eBay. No, I did not bid on it but was watching carefully and after it ended, I decided to call the listing agent in Alamosa (Mike Porter). Mike wasn't able to meet me up there but he did provide directions and instructions on where I could find the door key. The next weekend, I took a 5-hour drive south from Denver and discovered Jasper! The crazy thing about Jasper at the time was that it was not to be found on any maps. Remember those strange paper things we kept in our cars to help us find our way? LOL. There was an internet at the time but it was very rudimentary compared to what we have today. For a mapping alternative, we used Map Quest, which would find locations and provide simple driving directions which could be printed and taken along with a picture (map). Well, at the time, Map Quest didn't know about Jasper and there was basically zero information available about Jasper anywhere. Eventually, Google Maps and other mapping services started popping up but none of them had any knowledge of Jasper. Eventually, I learned that they relied on zip code databases to establish locations at the time and we all know, Jasper does not have a zip code. I sent emails and opened trouble tickets with all of the different mapping services at the time and didnt not have much luck lobbying them to add it. THIS, was the main reason I decided to register JasperColorado.com (http://JasperColorado.com)and give our town an official point of reference on the internet. Eventually after going back and forth with Google for 2 years, they agreed to add Jasper to the map as a "ghost town" which didn't have a zip code. Isn't that funny?! Times have changed a lot but thankfully, most things in Jasper have stayed the same. For those of you who remember, the first people that I met in Jasper were Mary and Clifford Green. I drove up to look at my cabin and they were neighbors at the time. Mary walked over and introduced herself and we had a lovely conversation. Imagine showing up in Jasper without having any information or background, that's how it was back then. Mary was very gracious and entertained tons of questions that I had. We must have talked for an hour. The second person I met was the caretaker at the time, BILL OSTER! Bill was a near-neighbor on the other side and he noticed me checking things out. He came over and introduced himself so we stopped by, got a tour and met his lovely wife, Sally. Bill was a real character, always quick on his feet and full of old stories and information about the area. Eventually, my dad moved to Jasper (Larry Sr.) and became good pals with Bill, Allen and the "coffee crew" of Jasper, and they've all moved on and passed the torch to us. Well folks, I feel so fortunate to have stumbled across Jasper on eBay 24 years ago. I was in my late 20s at the time and now have a family with (almost) teenagers, who have grown up there since they were born. We have had such an incredible time and so many treasured memories together in Jasper. It's impossible to imagine how life would be without our wonderful retreat in the wilderness. God has blessed us all. Merry Christmas, happy New Year and God bless you, from the Wolcott, Migliore and Hyde families. -Larry Wolcott

Hopefully, everyone has had an opportunity to review the latest proposed covenant revision. First, I would like to extend my gratitude to the POA volunteers who have worked so diligently on these much-needed updates. Thank you to everyone for the thoughtful work, and to the community for being open-minded throughout the process, which at times requires compromise. I'll be voting "yes" to the latest round of changes and appreciate the effort to be consistent with the intent of the existing covenants. There will always be "no" votes against any form of restrictions, especially in a community like Jasper, but that's not what we all signed up for. Here is a copy of the latest proposed revisions, in case you haven't seen the email. https://drive.google.com/file/d/11o0Gn21ulsPmxVhmf0TQ85rDYBDz4_Sc/view?usp=sharing -Larry Wolcott

Jasper Friends and Family, There is currently an email ballot being circulated regarding proposed amendments to our community's covenants. As these updates are long overdue, I would like to commend the Jasper board for undertaking this important work. However, I believe that it is important to give all community members the opportunity to provide feedback and refine the proposed covenants. Many of us are seeing the proposed changes for the first time, myself included, I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to review them and provide public feedback for discussion and debate. While some discussions may be taking place through email, Facebook, and phone calls, I recognize that not all members of our community participate in these forums. Therefore, I am using this publicly available forum to propose some edits and changes that I have already discussed with Kelly Slater, the president of our community. My utmost priority is to ensure that our covenants are updated in a manner that aligns with the spirit of our community while remaining consistent with Colorado state and Rio Grande County laws and ordinances. To that end, I suggest that the board and committee retract the yes/no vote and instead allow for public comment. Public comment is an essential component of any community rulemaking process, and I believe that it is crucial for all voices to be heard. Thanks again to our association and committee for taking up this hard but important work! -Larry Wolcott

Most of you probably haven't met Luke or Luella Anthony, who sadly have passed away. Luke was the person who redeveloped Jasper in the 80's and the mastermind for much of what we know and love in Jasper. When I met him years ago, he gave me a lot of the Jasper documents, maps and notes from the 1980's. Among the treasure trove was a VHS tape which he explained was sales material they used to market and sell the properties. Luke was in partnership with a young realtor named Bill Werner who I believe co-produced this sales video. Bill is still in the area and selling real estate in Alamosa. We've talked on the phone a few times, but never met in person. Well, I stumbled across this VHS tape and Marisa was nice enough to have it digitized for all of us to enjoy! If you pay close attention, you will recognize many of the scenes.. and even some of the people! I see a young and handsome David Slater and I'm pretty sure Bill Oster is there too. Charlie Sachet, the Evans and many other familiar faces. Kelly Slater, was that you?! Please enjoy this early Christmas gift from the Wolcott family, sponsored by the Lost Elk Lodge.
